Snowmass Ice Age Discovery Center
Did you know that the finest high-elevation ice age fossil site in the world is located less than a mile from the Snowmass Mall? In 2010, during construction on the Ziegler Reservoir a bulldozer operator uncovered the Tusk of a Columbian mammoth. That was just the tip of the ice berg. By the time they stopped excavating the site they had removed over 6,000 large bones and 30,000 small bones. These belong to over 52 species of vertebrate animals. Many of these fossils and pictures of the excavation are on display at the Ice Age Discover Center in the Snowmass Mall. If you are looking to take a break from skiing or passing by on your way to lunch, swing in, the entry is free and the experience is incredible. Hang up your Snowmass Ski Rentals and get lost in Snowmass over 100,000 years ago.
The Snowmass Ice Age Discovery Center is open thru 4⁄16 — daily from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Admission is free. Call 970−922−2277 for any questions. Check out this quick video.
