Learn to Ski: Tips for Beginners at Any Age

Whether you have a child who wants to ski, or you’re interested in making some turns yourself, it’s never too late to learn how to ski.

What’s the best age to learn to ski?

Kids can usually begin skiing around 4 – 5 years old at a very basic level, and they will continue to improve as their motor skills develop. Younger children can still be introduced to skiing by allowing them to play in the snow with ski gear on, like boots and a helmet, to get them used to the equipment. Adults can get started at any time in their life and often pick up skiing just as quickly as kids!

Where can I learn to ski?

Most ski mountains offer lessons, private instruction, or separate bunny hills” for newbies to learn on. The four Aspen/Snowmass mountains in Colorado have a variety of specialized ski-school programs for every age, as does Park City, Utah which also offers family lessons. Depending on your comfort level, group lessons or private lessons will be the most effective way to learn; however, there are always internet tutorials or the trial-and-error option – just remember to always wear a helmet, no matter your skill level.

Is it harder to learn to ski as an adult?

While children can be enthusiastic about learning to ski, some adults are hesitant to step into the ski world. Many adults are stepping into skis for the first time, and they pick up the skills just as quickly as children! It’s important that you take a lesson from a professional. Lessons will help you find the proper form, avoid bad habits, lower the chance of injury, and give you a confidence boost. Try to ski as often as possible, too – invest in a season pass and practice, practice, practice!

What do I need to get started?

First off, a positive attitude. You will fall while learning to ski, but it’s important to get back up and keep trying. Beyond that, though, you’ll want to make sure your body is physically ready for skiing. The stronger your legs are, the more stamina you’ll have and the longer you can stay on the mountain. Check out these preconditioning exercises to get you ready for the mountain. If you think you might have any physical injuries, see a doctor before you hit the slopes.

You’ll also need all the right gear. This equipment guide will help you find exactly what you need to get started. The best option is to rent the gear, that way you can test out what you like. Ski Butlers makes that part easy by delivering exactly what you need, from skis, boots, a helmet, goggles and more, right to your door.
