Steamboat Preps for Opening Day!
Four more days until Steamboat Resort opens! With another storm heading our way this weekend, Steamboat already sits on over 42” at their mid mountain and 52” at the summit. In total since October, the summit has seen over 70″ of snow! Storm after storm has hit Routt County and the locals here are getting extra excited to kick off the season.
With five lifts and 66 trails opening, including the gondola and Storm Peak Express, the resort is opening on “Scholarship Day”, which means passes will not be honored. However, all ticket sales on Wednesday will benefit the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, and there will be a $30 all mountain day pass available along with a $20 mid mountain day pass. In past super snowy years, “Scholarship Day” has brought in up to $75,000 to help families participate in the winter sports. This year, of course, the resort is shooting to break that record, so come out and show your support!
Steamboat Resort has also seen some great renovations this year. In addition to last years’ brand new gondola, Steamboat’s terrain parks have gotten a bit of a lift up as well. There will be 25 new features, including the twenty foot monster, dubbed “The Wall”. A boarder/skier cross course has also been added to the terrain which will host three boarder and skier cross events from January 22nd through the 29th, including the only US qualifier for the International Tele Cross Finals. The USASA Boarder/Skier Cross will be bringing some of the best skiers and boarders in the field from all ages to Steamboat Springs.
The course itself will begin at Jess’ Cutoff and wind through Mavericks Terrain Park, ending at Giggle Gulch. The course is 7/10th of a mile and with racers hitting speeds of up to 35 mph, competition time won’t be more then one minute! After the races in January, the course will be open for the public to see how they handle the advanced to intermediate terrain.
The main base area of the resort has also been going through some renovations. The decade long development project known as “Steamboat Unbridled” is working into its third year, mainly focusing on the promenade that connects One Steamboat Place to Ski Time Square at the base of the mountain. There will also be added snow melt walk ways, light fixtures, and a water feature at Burgess Creek.
With La Niña favoring the northwestern mountains of Colorado, Steamboat Springs has a great chance in seeing an epic winter this year. People are already starting up their sleds and strapping on their snowshoes to enjoy what Mother Nature has so far offered to us here in the Rockies and are anticipating Wednesday’s opening day. Steamboat Resort has made the decision to open the mountain, top to bottom, which will be the first time done so on opening day in the last decade. Who knows how much more will fall in the next four days, but with what is already blanketing Mt Werner, we will surely be kicking off the season right.
