Sundance on the Slopes

When you think of winters in Park City, you might picture skiing The Greatest Snow on Earth®, the 2002 Olympics, or the Sundance Film Festival.

Founded in Utah by Robert Redford, the Sundance Film Festival had its first Park City edition in January of 1981. Each year since, for ten days Park City welcomes film enthusiasts from around the globe who bring with them vibrancy, excitement, and zest for independent film.

While most visitors are busy attending film premieres, music events, panel discussions, and parties during the Festival, a not-so-secret locals’ secret is that it’s actually a great time to ski. The local resorts — Deer Valley Resort and Park City Mountain — tend to be quieter, with empty lift lines and trails wide open for your enjoyment.

The end of January is a unique time to visit Park City as it provides the opportunity to combine the thrill of winter snow sports with the intrigue of independent film.

Attending film screenings requires a bit of foresight (the same goes for making a dinner reservation!) and even though tickets sell out quickly, there are opportunities to join a waitlist for an impromptu Sundance film experience. It’s also fun to check out panel discussions and other events in Park City’s Historic Main Street area.

The Film Festival is an exciting time and also a busy time, which can make navigating Park City a challenge. The best, most efficient way to get from point A to point B? Park City Transit — it’s free, convenient, and during big events like Sundance, Transit has increased frequency and special access to otherwise closed areas. Utilizing your lodging shuttle (if available) is also a great option.

So while you may think you’re traveling to Park City this January exclusively for the Sundance Film Festival, don’t overlook the chance to make a few turns on the mountain — you won’t regret it!
