Squaw Valley Changes Name to Palisades Tahoe
Squaw Valley recently announced that they will be changing their name to Palisades Tahoe, effective immediately. This name change comes with the resort acknowledging that, “the old name was derogatory and offensive,” according to a statement they released on their website announcing the name change.
After talking with Native American groups, including the local Washoe Tribe, the company dropped the name as the Native Americans within the area look at the term as a slur.
This name change, meaning steep, high cliffs, is meant to depict the massive chutes and granite faces throughout the resort. The new name will be used for both Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows.
In the same press release the Palisades Tahoe President and COO Dee Byrnes stated, “This name change reflects who we are as a ski resort and community — we have a reputation for being progressive and boundary-breaking when it comes to feats of skiing and snowboarding. We have proven that those values go beyond the snow for us.”
Along with the name change, Palisades Tahoe has also created a new logo which is represented by an eagle with two mountains added that can be seen as eagle feathers or the waters of Lake Tahoe.
