Still deciding where to take your next trip? Look no further than Aspen, Colorado! Aspen is the place to be all year long, and the winter season is packed with exciting events. Ski season is already underway, meaning events like Wintersköl and Gay Ski Week have passed, but here are some events you can still look forward to this year:
January 23 – 26: Winter X Games
ESPN’s Winter X Games bring together over 200 of the world’s best athletes on skis, snowboards, and snowmobiles. These sports competitions are free and open to the public, but the X Games also includes a music festival, which does cost some money. This year’s headliners are Rae Sremmurd, Alesso, Bazzi, and Illenium. With a free shuttle to the event, and discounted tickets for college students, how could you not go?
February 12 – 15: Freeskiing Open
Once the pro athletes have made their way home from the X Games, amateur athletes can head to Buttermilk Mountain for the annual Freeskiing Open. This competition opens up the X Games Aspen Slopestyle and Superpipe and Big Air courses to anyone over 14 years old. The Freeskiing Open is an Association of Freeskiing Professionals Gold Level event as well as an FIS NorAm Cup event, preparing athletes for the FIS World Cup. Check out the event schedule here.
February 19 – 22: Laugh Festival 2020
Aspen’s annual Laugh Festival means FREE comedy every day at 4 pm at the Silver City Saloon from February 19 – 22. The festival kicks off with an Après Comedy Hour featuring a free show by Consensual Improv! and a later show by The Second City that you will need to buy tickets for. Each day has a new host (including Trevor Noah) and a new set of comedians, so be sure to stop by.
February 28 – 29: Aspen Mountain Film Festival (Winter Edition)
The Aspen Mountain Film Festival will be hosting their Winter Edition in February of this year. This festival celebrates extraordinary storytelling, and welcomes short film submissions that run 3 – 40 minutes long and are family-friendly. This year’s theme is “Adventure,” though all films should incorporate themes of adventure, conservation, and gender, race, and ethnic diversity. The festival itself highlights the unique philosophies of Aspen, and the connection of the mind, body, and spirit.
February 29-March 1: Power of Four Ski Mountaineering Race
The Audi Power of Four Ski Mountaineering Race is the winter edition of the series, and includes biking and running during the summer race. Athletes race in teams of two across 25 miles and over 10,000 vertical feet on four mountains in the area. The athletes start at Snowmass, trek to Buttermilk, then Aspen Highlands, and ski to the end at the gondola plaza at Aspen Mountain. Don’t feel like hiking up and down four mountains? There is also a Power of Two course that covers just the Aspen Highlands and Aspen Mountain, or another shorter course from the base of Aspen Highlands to the gondola plaza. Follow the event on social media at #PowerOfFour.
March 20 – 27: Bud Light Spring Jam
Spanning two weekends in March, the 20th annual Bud Light Spring Jam will be your go-to for competitions and parties. The Core Party concert downtown kicks off the festival, and don’t miss the next day’s KickAspen Big Air Invitational. Adults and kids can both head over to the terrain park for Boot Camp – instructions on how to slide a box or hit a rail. With concerts, skiing, and non-stop parties, Aspen might make a better Spring Break getaway than Florida.
Any day: Great food, great skiing, great people
